Digital Photography at Amateur Sport Events
Making money with a digital camera is a definite possibility where there is a gathering of people. One possibility to consider is the wonderful world of amateur sports. Make a point of checking out the sporting calendar in your state or county.
For example, take golf and golf tournaments. Wherever there is a golf course, there will be golf tournaments. Negotiate with the management of the golf course to appoint you as their official photographer to cover their golf tournaments.
This could go in two ways. You could negotiate with the golf course management to appoint you as their photographer for the event. Basically, they assign you to take pictures. All pictures will then belong to them. In addition, you could make money supplying prints of all pictures taken. The management promotes the service to participants and makes money selling photographs.
Alternatively, the golf course management may not wish to pay you a fixed fee. Then negotiate that you be allowed to take pictures at the event at your own pace, taking candid photos of golfers during the event. You then sell photographs to the participants. You would have to offer the management a commission for photographs sold. You will need a counter at the event to do the selling. In addition, you could promote your services by wear a t-shirt and cap with your business name. Make sure you have visible signage strategic placed and at your counter. At the counter do remember to distribute your business cards and leaflets. Subsequently, have all pictures uploaded to your web site for participant to browse and make orders after the event.
Now you can think about similar approaches for other sport events like bowling tournaments, netball tournaments, tennis tournaments, dragon boat races, fishing derbies, sailing regattas, curling bonspiels, etc.
What about other possibilities involving kids and sports? You could follow a Little League team throughout a season, taking candid shots and action shots. At the end of the year, you could create a scrapbook or photo album using the best of the pictures, then take orders from proud parents. Don't forget to take pictures of the team's stars and lesser skilled players. The kids and their parents will thank you for it.
One other idea could be to make a calendar using photos of the Little League kids, or of the golf tournament, or any other sporting event. Sell the calendar to athletes, managers, coaches, facility management, parents, etc. Sell the calendars at the golf course or at the events. Leaving some calendars at the front desk would help promote and arrange with the counter staff to take orders.
You could also prepare a slide presentation of the event and arrange to show it during a club function or at the bar. This will surely help to promote sales of your calendar. Alternatively, you could distribute free screensavers with mention of your business name and services. Encourage takers to redistribute it to their friends. This is truly viral marketing and will definite promote your service a long way. You are on your way to making money with digital photography.
