Selling Picture Cards and Postcards

Selling Picture Cards and Postcards

So, you are looking to making money with digital photography. One approach could be to create your own beautiful cards or postcards and sell them. Here is how it can go. Take photographs of flowers, wildlife, local attractions, breathtaking scenery, etc. Have them mounted on good quality card stock. Don't forget to put your name and web site address on the back of the card. You can also position this information on a corner of the photograph itself with the help of your digital photo editing software. You never know when someone will contact you with an order or to enquire about a custom digital photography assignment.

Selling cards or postcards requires more than just taking pictures. You will need a printing service to print your products. For small quantities you can do the mounting onto cards at home. However, once your quantity increases you would need the service of the printer to do the assembly... this could mean that your business has grown.

Finding Your Ideal Market. You might initially think there is no market for cards or postcards, given the prevalence of cards widely available at card shops, department stores, chain stores and even supermarkets. You are correct in a way, as such places are not the right platform to sell your products. You cannot compete with these items on prices as they are mass produced. So, is there an alternative route? You have to look elsewhere. Have you thought about being a big fish in a small pond?

Let me explain. Once, a friend and I visited the amazing Pike Place market in Seattle. Anyone who has been there will remember the seemingly endless mile after mile of shops and vendor stalls, the unlimited shopping choices, the novelties and miscellaneous merchandise looking for buyers.

My friends and I were truly overwhelmed. The items on display all began to look alike. Glassy eyed, we wandered through quickly, rarely stopping at any particular stall for more than a few seconds. We bought nothing after covering the complete stretch.

Later on, we visited a smaller shop elsewhere that sold relatively few items. There, everything we saw stood out and captured our interest. We ended up buying several items. This is what I meant by being a big fish in a small pond. Apply this concept when marketing your greeting cards and postcards.

Sell your products at small arts and craft promotions, which are especially popular prior during Christmas shopping season. Enquire about a booth or stall at a marketplace or farmer's market. Contact boutiques and small specialty shops and ask if they will carry your products. Visit the local tourist attractions and ask vendors at those locations about displaying your work. Tourists will appreciate your cards and postcards as a souvenir of their visit.

Do some testing on selling cards individually or in a box. Usually it is best to sell cards individually rather than in boxes as other than Christmas cards, people rarely purchase cards by the box. You might consider offering a discount for quantities of six or more.

Lastly, don't forget to explore using the internet and a web site as a shop front to promote your unique cards and other products created with your digital photography.
